How we begin
My first step is to have an introductory meeting with each new student. For young students, I ask that the parent(s) attend as well. During this session, I explain my teaching approach, discuss goals, and answer any questions. As necessary, I also provide suggestions as to the purchase (or rental) of helpful equipment, and where to get materials. If a violin hasn’t been procured yet, I am happy to discuss that with a student/parent prior to this first lesson. Please contact me if you’re interested.
Options
I offer 45-minute lessons at my home in Hillcrest when COVID isn’t an issue. During the heart of the COVID pandemic, I moved everyone to online arrangements, using either Zoom, GoogleMeet, or Skype, and I will consider doing that again, depending upon official guidance. I’m currently not wearing a mask, and I don’t ask my students to, but this could change at any time depending on local COVID concern. (I’ve found that students make decent progress during online lesson times, but nothing beats in-person lessons.)
Convenience
I offer the convenience of Hillcrest’s central location, but in a quiet neighborhood with plenty of parking. My home is just around the corner from Roosevelt Middle School (which is on the northern edge of Balboa Park/zoo), not far from Florence Elementary, and 1½ miles north of San Diego High. Much of my available lesson time coincides with the end of the school day, and I even have a few students who have their lessons before school starts. The Park and Upas bus stop is very near my house.
